Default Selling out.

What a load of crap. You start to hate a band because they sell more records than they used to? Or is it because people like them?

It's so dumb when people start to hate a band just because they become popular, and claim they've sold out. One good example is Metallica. They write 4 thrash masterpieces and then their 5th album is slightly less metal, but still a great album, and metal fans hate them for "selling out". It's bullshit. Dont you think they're making lots of money because its a good album?

Their next albums turned away from all signs of metal, and then almost back (but still crap) into nu-metal. Those albums were crap but it wasnt selling out, they were just taking a different musical direction.

Bands like Dream Theater and Opeth do it often but never "sell out" because they are unknown to the mainstream world.

All this selling out crap is shit. You cant just claim a band is shit because they make money. It's just idiotic.

If the music stayed the same I'm sure nobody would have a problem with bands becoming more popular.

When bands sell out they usually change their sound, in order to make more money, and why shouldn't people have a problem with that?

Metallica consciously made more commercially viable music - they definitely sold out. The Black album is a travesty of commericalised metal. Scooped guitars? They practially designed the sound, if not the style for Metalcore. Truly awful. It's not becuase they made money that they've sold out, it's becuase they made their music so fucking watered down to get thet money.

We say they sold out becuase they turned their back on Metal, and they deserve all the Trash talk about them they get, no matter how good their previous albums were.

a popular misconception behind selling out is that its offensive for capitalistic reasons. its equaly offensive for a band to change their image to sell 1000 albums as it is to sell 1,000,000.

in this day and age of home recording studios its not like you cant do this stuff at home and then just host it at an e-label and have 10x the selling power.

Yeah, I think that selling out (to me anyways) is when a band changes their image/music/whatever to make more money. Opeth I think haven't sold out.. Behemoth I think haven't sold out.. There is a difference between getting mainstream attention and "selling out".

Selling out to a bigger record company like Roadrunner is completely acceptable to me as long as the music doesn't suffer much (even though I didn't like the latest Opeth and Dream Theater releases as much as I enjoyed their earlier works, I don't blame Roadrunner for anything). Not all steps toward commercialism automatically destroy the band's creativity, but sometimes the dollar signs on their eyes are unmistakable, especially when bands like Metallica, In Flames and Within Temptation are concerned.

But what about selling out to fans? Have you ever recognised a band afraid of taking any risks whatsoever? *coughhammerfallcough*

I haven't listened to any full albums by Within Temptation, but I heard they had some quality in their material ten years ago. Like symphonics and grunts and other goods that are now simplified into standard radio rock/pop for the mainstream's likings. Back in the day they used to be something more than just Madonna with electric guitars, or so I've been told.

I only have their first release, and it used to sound like a melodic doom/death band with some female vocals, just like old Theatre of Tragedy.
